Welcome to the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Zambia.
For more than six decades, this school has asked the questions that matter most to our society: how people live and make a living, how they are governed, what they believe, how they communicate, and how a nation builds a future that is both prosperous and just. Guided by the University’s motto, “Service and Excellence,” we pursue those questions through teaching that stretches the mind, research that informs policy and practice, and engagement that keeps us close to the communities we serve.
Our promise to students is a straightforward one. We offer an education that builds not only knowledge, but also the critical judgement, communication skills and professional competence needed to thrive in a changing world. Across our eleven academic departments, students progress from undergraduate study through to doctoral research in programmes accredited by the Higher Education Authority (HEA) and taught by academics who are active scholars in their fields.
We are equally committed to scholarship with consequence. Our researchers work on the issues shaping Zambia and the region. Among them population and development, economic and social policy, governance, gender, health and wellbeing, culture, language and the media, and they publish, advise and collaborate well beyond the campus. For government, industry, civil society and partner universities at home and abroad, this school is an open door.
