Bachelor of Arts in History

The School of Humanities and Social Sciences offers an undergraduate degree programme in Bachelor of Arts in History. The programme is designed to produce graduates equipped with well-rounded historical knowledge as well as research and analytical skills indispensable to investigating and illuminating Zambia’s past, culture, politics and economy in order to come to terms with the challenges that beset the country today.

Overview

The programme inculcates in learners the ability to appreciate historical academic debates and theories while affording lecturers to test the suitability of own research writings or publications with students through lectures and discussions. Such interactions create space for both students and lecturers to explore new frontier of knowledge, thereby contribute toward advancing human knowledge as a whole.

This programme was developed as soon as the University developed in 1966 in order to alleviate the national manpower shortage in the field of history education by providing a degree programme that equips graduates who would respond to the developing requirements of the public and private education sector especially at senior secondary level, and tertiary institutions of education.

Through exploring mankind’s past economic, social, political and cultural activities, achievements and failures, the study of history enables students to come to terms with the present, to appreciate society’s challenges and thus be able to shape the future. This programme equips students with useful analytical, interpretive and writing skills essential to carrying out research and documenting the past. In developing this programme the biggest stakeholder was the government of the Republic of Zambia through the Ministry of Education as it desired to develop a cadre of well-prepared history educators.

The Bachelor of Arts in History is aimed at developing basic skills required for conducting academic historical research. The most important of these skills being: the ability to seek information independently; to analyse and assess existing information critically; and to produce and apply information independently.

The central aims of this programme are to enable students to (i) develop historical consciousness (ii) acquire research and analytical skills and (iii) sharpen their writing skills.

The learning outcomes of this programme are to enable to:

(i) develop awareness of major historical issues and events;

(ii) appreciate competing academic debates/theories in history;

(iii) acquire analytical skills and; and

(iv) apply such skills together with historical reasoning to understanding and resolving challenges of the modern society.

Minimum of a credit in five O’Levels including English Language and any other any four (4) subjects of which one must be an Art

Please note that tuition fees are paid in four installments as indicated below:

The initial installment is 25% of the tuition fees, plus all other/user fees paid at registration
The second installment is 25% of the tuition fees paid at the end of the first term
The third installment is 25% of the tuition fees paid in the second term
The last installment is 25% of the tuition fees is paid before writing the final examination.
