Introduction

This programme provides students with the tools to systematically study society, social stability, change and development; to understand the patterns and structures that shape social interaction between individuals, groups, and nations; to identify the means through which individual choices are influenced by larger social structures and vice-versa; to critically interpret social patterns from multiple perspectives; and to understand cultural variation and human diversity locally and globally. Nonetheless, in line with the vision of the University of Zambia which is “An eminent University driven by pursuit of knowledge, Innovation and social responsiveness”, and mission i.e. “To provide relevant, innovative and demand-driven higher education for socio-economic development”, the Master of Arts in Sociology is designed to produce graduates with the appropriate skills and knowledge in Sociology. As such, capacity in building of human resource by training at master’s level and skills’ improvement will contribute to human and social development.

The MA in Sociology offers a comprehensive understanding of social systems, advanced research skills, and the ability to address and influence social issues effectively. The programme provides a foundation for academic advancement, professional growth, and meaningful contributions to society. The MA in Sociology explores the social and cultural realities of life in all its forms. Knowledge of sociology empowers the graduates with abilities and opportunities to think creatively and critically about the connections that shape everyday lives as well as organisations and social relations in society. For instance, the breaking of sociology into Sociology of medicine has seen it inject a different impetus of understanding health behaviour and social dimensions of illness, which no other social science covers. This programme is also needed as it helps to promote the professional status of sociologists, both in relation to law, health and agriculture and sociology in the sense that it shows the social systems in these areas. The programme equips students with knowledge that these other areas have all the attributes of social behaviour which can only be researched and explained sociologically using its theories.

The MA in Sociology is also important in that in the case of malpractice, failure to police incompetent practitioners in social systems, limited access to quality care and service in many areas especially for the vulnerable members of our communities, and placing professional interest ahead of the public's interest, sociologists have been significant critics of social inequality. In doing so, they have established themselves as objective professionals. Moreover, Sociology’s social justice orientation through studying social inequality and social problems equip students with the desire and motivation to change society for the better. Also, in the context of far reaching global, regional and national socio-economic and environmental effects, this programme addresses the critical need of personnel trained in conducting social impact assessments.

The MA in Sociology programme will equip students with necessary research and critical thinking skills. These could lead to more locally relevant studies and solutions that address specific national issues, such as development challenges, cultural preservation, and social issues. Thus, given its broad focus to the study of human societies, sociology is well positioned to produce well-trained and qualified personnel with an awareness of their society and its problems as well as ways in which they can help resolve those problems. A specialization in Sociology also provides orientation that will enable the graduate to be innovative, work as agents of positive change and to provide imaginative leadership in a rapidly changing world. Thus, this programme helps to address specific skill gaps, contributing to a more knowledgeable and capable workforce. This is so because the study of sociology sharpens critical thinking and analytical skills such that graduates learn to assess social phenomena from multiple perspectives, question assumptions, and develop well-reasoned arguments. These skills are highly transferable and beneficial in many professional contexts. More so, there are very few sociologists to contribute to human and social development in all spheres of our society.

The aim of a Master of Arts in Sociology program is to produce graduates who are well-equipped to contribute effectively to sociological research, policy-making, social advocacy, and community development, thereby addressing societal challenges and advancing understanding of human behavior and social dynamics. It does so by providing a deep understanding of social structure, processes, and relationships. With this knowledge, it will help students contribute to the national development. Other aims include:

1. To provide students with training in the principles and applications of Sociology as a science of society
2. Equip students with knowledge and skills which will help them contribute to research at community and national level.
3. Equip students with skills to gain deep expertise and critical thinking that will lead to problem-solving by developing advanced critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
4. Equip students with knowledge and skills to enhance their ability to communicate complex ideas effectively through writing and presentations.
5. Additionally, the postgraduate program is expected to make an invaluable contribution of new skills and knowledge to the existing body of knowledge in the field of Sociology.

Based on the Zambia Qualifications Framework (ZQF) level 9 descriptors, the Programme Learning Outcomes (PLO) that specify and measure what a student will be able to do as the result of having successfully completed the Masters in Sociology programme at UNZA are outlined below.

At the end of the masters in Sociology programme, the graduate shall:

• Demonstrate advanced understanding of key sociological theories, concepts, and paradigms across various subfields of Sociology
• Apply sociological theories and concepts to analyze complex social phenomena, institutions, and processes.
• Develop the ability to critically analyze and evaluate sociological literature, research studies, and social phenomena.
• Critically assess and integrate sociological literature to inform research design and theoretical framework.
• Adhere to ethical standards in conducting research, including issues related to consent, confidentiality, and the responsible use of data
• Evaluate the social impact of policies, programs, or practices, considering their implications for different populations.
• Utilize appropriate techniques for data collection, such as surveys, interviews, or fieldwork, and apply statistical or thematic analysis to interpret findings
• Effectively communicate research findings through scholarly writing, including peer-reviewed publications, and conference presentations.
• Provide policy relevant and evidence based information to policy-makers for the resolution of societal problems.
• Act in a manner that promotes social justice and sustainable socio-economic development
• Apply qualitative and/or quantitative research methods appropriately to address research questions and finding possible solutions to societal problems
• Demonstrate leadership abilities in academic, professional, or community settings, managing projects, and guiding research efforts.
• Prepare for careers in academia, research, policy analysis, social services, or related fields, demonstrating the skills and knowledge required for professional success.
• Demonstrate a commitment to social justice, encouraging students to use their sociological expertise to advocate for marginalized and disadvantaged communities.
