About the Department

The Department of Demography, Population Sciences, Monitoring and Evaluation was established originally as Demography Division in 1986. Then in the year 2011 it was created as a full-fledged department in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Zambia. The department was established with funding from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) with the aim of training a cadre of demographers in the country.

Prior to its elevation as full department, in 2006, the Demography Division developed the first-ever nationally recognised Monitoring and Evaluation Centre of Excellence (M&E CoE). The M&E CoE with financial and technical support from UNFPA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) under the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) fund project. The Centre of Excellence was created to respond to both public and private demand for capacity building in Monitoring and Evaluation, data analysis and gender based related capacity building. Furthermore, the centre was designed to support conducting of public and private evaluations to show evidence of benefits of social investments in the public and private sectors as well as in NGOs and Civil Society space.

The Centre of Excellence as an institution has been working with the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of National Development Planning, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Higher Education, Ministry of General Education, Ministry of Gender, Ministry of Community Development and Social Services, Ministry of Youth and Sport and other government departments and agencies in developing M&E capacity and system strengthening. The aims of the M&E Centre of Excellence Department are basically threefold: Academic Training, Research and Monitoring and Evaluation Consultancy.
